REVIEW:
The
thing about this film, besides managing to quell the fears of
the world in the “ruining” of their icons, is the
story detail. I can not remember the last time a film did not
have big loop holes that made you wonder if they ran out of time
or some one lost a few scenes to computer crashings. Often not
ruining the film but keeping it from grandeur.
Here Abrams and his sublime writers, Roberto Orsi and Alex Kurtzman,
weave about words and subplots like Italian textile merchants
five generations into the trade!
Story
goes…The U.S.S. Enterprise has begun its voyages. But before
it can go where no man has gone, they must head over to a pesky
electrical storm raging over the planet Vulcan…
That’s
all you can know right now. Except that each of the beloved Rodenberry
characters is introduced with endorphin producing glee. Spock
and Kirk get the deepest backstory as it should be.
Spock,
played by Zachary
Quinto, is wonderfully Spock. It is amazing how you buy him
in the role from the first frame. Quinto is so serious here. I
wouldn't mind trying to turn that frown upside down - purrrrrr.
Abrams
deploys Leonard
Nimoy to trip the light-years-fantastic as Spock too. The
old school mixing with the new generation via this cultural phenom
is delightful - and often subtly funny. I am not even a "Trekkie"
and I appreciated the gesture.
James
T., played by Chris
Pine, comes of as a testosterone amped bar brawl guy. But
as the movie digs in, Pine morphs into the Kirk many know deeply.
The work by Pine is subtle and his casul personality growth works.
Bones
McCoy (Karl Urban), Scottie (Simon Peg) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana)
steal their scenes like career jewel thieves.
The
story, as I mentioned above, is flawless. The answers are given
usually before you even need to ask. Considering the amount of
information being thrown at you in warp speed, that’s a
blessing.
J.
J. Abrams is like our generation’s Orson
Welles (if Welles had have allowed to bloom as all expected
after Kane). This man Abrams gets how to match the "out
there" with the logical sides of the brain - and we get to
share. How cool is that?
Snack
recommendation: A bit of Romulan Pate dressed with a
Vulcan Holiday Berry Tort, finished with a strong Starship Stinger
(Shaken at warp, not stirred)
