In this spin-off from the Shrek film franchise, we learn Puss’s history. The ever-lovable homeless kitten Puss (Antonio Banderas) is taken in by a kindly woman who runs an orphanage. He pals up with young Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis. The place is crawling with fairy tale characters) who sets Puss up to take the fall for a robbery, making our furry hero an outlaw and dissolving the childhood friendship.

In present day, Humpty pops back into Puss’s life as both are searching for the magic beans that will grow the famous beanstalk leading to the castle in the sky where the Golden Goose lays those cool, expensive golden eggs. Puss falls for Humpty’s secret partner, the very purrrrty sneak thief Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek). Their efforts are thwarted by mean husband and wife outlaws Jack and Jill (voiced by Billy Bob Thorton and Amy Sedaris).

Special Features: Some really good ones! Okay, I was nuts about the adorable kittens in the little short included in this pack “The Three Diablos”. OMG are these guys cute and do they give Puss a run for his cat crunchies! Just worth buying the whole pack to get this.
You get cute interactive activities that are fun, at least on a first time run-through: “Puss' Paw Pouncing Challenge”, “A DreamWorks Fairytale”, “Fairytale Pop-Up Book”, “Kitty Keyboard” “Klepto Kitty” and “Kitty Strikes Again”.

There is a pop-up on screen “Trivia Track” that adds to the interest of the film. In “Purr-fect Pairing” you see Antonio and Salma who have worked together before in live action, having a blast voicing their roles and hanging out at press events for the movie. Very cute. “The Animator’s Corner” is also a picture-in-picture track showing how scenes were animated. A few “Deleted Scenes” are presented in mostly storyboard or partially animated form but you get the idea and some of these are very fun to watch. “Kitten to Cat: The Progression of Puss in Boots” is the history of the character from Shrek to his own film.

Wrapping Up: Yay, a cat as the hero for a change. Zorro-like moves, over-the-top cuteness and Antonio Banderas’ voice just make Puss a fave. There is tons of animated action in this movie, maybe even too much but Puss and pals are beautifully animated, the jokes are, for the most part, quite clever, the bad guys funny and evil and yes, there is a message of friendship, responsibility etc. thrown in. If you and your family love cats, if you loved Puss in the Shrek films and if you want a Blu-Ray/DVD set that gives you hours of fun and colorful extras, this one should be headed for your shelf at home! First thing.. watch “The Three Diablos”. You’ll wanna curl up and purr.
