Bluntly
speaking? I decided to take advantage of Mr. Johnny
Depp's renewed popularity and use it as an excuse to re-expose
this underrated, hardly seen film
the overlooked masterpiece
of Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing
in Las Vegas. Thanks to the Charlie
Kaufmans of the independent film world, new audiences are
willing to take "mind trips" at the movies
viola!
Here's the ultimate trip kids - and its ancient as far as film-world...practicall,
"a classic."
Based
on Hunter S. Thompson's wildly popular drug culture novel of the
same name, director Terry Gilliam lets two of our greatest actors
go to edges of madness with their characters. Though several viewings
are recommended - starting with one is sufficient. The film is
available at any video store or buy

Story
goes
Raoul Duke (Johnny
Depp) has been assigned to cover a desert race in Las Vegas.
It's the sixties and the height of the hallucinogenic era. Duke's
chest deep in the scene. So is his oddly menacing sidekick, compadre
and attorney, a one Dr. Gonzo (a Hefty McHeff styled Benicio Del
Toro). Raoul invites Gonzo to join him for the weekend. Seems
this Gonzo fella is also Raoul's drug supplier of sorts, and is
getting in tune with the straight and narrow that belly's up the
latest designer drugs
Off
the two set, trunk of drugs and liqueur in tow...and faster then
you can sing a verse from Jefferson Airplane's 'White Rabbit',
their weekend get-a-away turns into a kaleidoscopic drug crazed
shower of hilarity. Oh how you'll laugh at the antics these strange
room mates conjure up. The story Raoul's been hired to cover quickly
becomes a lost cause as the two paint the town red
and green
and
yellow mixed with periwinkle fruitcake hues, dolloped with star
flakes and moonbeams of the mind.
There's
tons of cameos from the likes of Gary Busey and Christina Ricci--even
Toby Maguire has an "incident" with the two. And its
time capsuled multi-genre soundtrack is also worthy of immediate
purchase.
Depp
and Del Toro are masters at character creation
duh
here
with the eye Gilliam has for tripping the light fantastic it's
a virtual hootenanny, and luckily for all of us its been captured
on film.
Snack
recommendation: A quick stop in bat country to load up with
a case of beer, a quart of tequila, five sheets of high quality
blotter acid, half a salt shaker full of mescaline, uppers downers
etc etc
I'M KIDDING. Kinda.
